SENI BILAH MELAYU

WHAT IS SENI BILAH MELAYU?

Seni Bilah Melayu is a contemporary Silat system from Malaysia, founded by Guru Ilmi Khalid and rooted in traditional Silat combat practice.Its principles come from the Malay combat arts he has learned from his Silat teachers.It is a weapon-based art. Principles learned through the blade are applied across different weapons and empty-hand combat.

THE SYSTEM

Training is built around Malay Silat combat principles and concepts, supported by fixed Buah combat sequences and non-fixed Kaedah reactions.Training is conducted with safe training weapons in a controlled and respectful environment. Ego is left outside the training space.The combat approach is weapon-based. To defend against a weapon attack, one must first understand how the weapon is used to attack. From this understanding, we build our training around how realistic attacks are delivered—and how we must move accordingly in defence and counterattack. The same principles remain when the weapon is no longer in the hand.The aim is adaptable skill: knowledge that can be trained, tested and passed on.

WEAPONS AND EMPTY HANDS

WEAPONSThe first three weapons taught are small weapons: the knife, the kerambit and the kapak kecil, or small axe. Two medium-sized weapons follow: the tekpi, also known as the sai, and the keris.Progression is not automatic. The founder determines when—and whether—a student is ready to progress.


EMPTY HANDSWithout an iron weapon in hand, the body becomes the weapon.Seni Tangan Kosong—empty-hand techniques—is taught between weapons lessons in Seni Bilah Melayu. It is divided into two main sections: Seni Pukulan, or striking techniques, and Seni Kuncian, or locking techniques.

SILAT TOMOI

Silat Tomoi is a Malay-based kickboxing method. Within Seni Bilah Melayu, it is the standing striking and conditioning component of its empty-hand training. It may also be trained as a standalone method.Training develops punches, elbows, knees and kicks alongside movement, defence, combinations, padwork and conditioning. The limbs become the body’s weapons—especially the elbows.Guru Ilmi Khalid’s foundation in Silat Tomoi came through his late teacher, Guru Jak Othman of Silat Tomoi Raja Rimau. Within Seni Bilah Melayu, this foundation continues to be developed through Silat principles, concepts, combat logic and flow.Striking is developed for power, speed and accuracy. In partner training, timing, speed and accuracy are prioritised, while power is applied under control. Defence is practised with every strike, without exception.In Silat Tomoi Seni Bilah Melayu, most defence is trained offensively rather than as a passive response to attack.

THE FOUNDER

GURU ILMI KHALIDGuru Ilmi Khalid is the founder and Head Trainer of Seni Bilah Melayu. He is a Silat teacher, writer and creative practitioner whose work brings together traditional combat arts, weapons training, research and documentation.Seni Bilah Melayu is his Silat expression: a contemporary system rooted in the knowledge passed down by his teachers and developed through continued practice, testing and teaching.He believes Silat should contribute towards making the practitioner a better person. Technical ability must be developed together with responsibility, humility, restraint and respect.His aim is to preserve useful martial knowledge and pass it on responsibly.

TEACHERS AND INHERITANCE

Seni Bilah Melayu is Guru Ilmi Khalid’s own system. It is rooted in direct training under his teachers and shaped by knowledge taught directly, practised and tested.Their systems remain distinct. What continues within Seni Bilah Melayu is an inheritance of method, principle and responsibility.


THE LATE GURU JAK OTHMANSilat Harimau Berantai • Silat Tomoi Raja RimauGuru Jak Othman was Guru Ilmi Khalid’s late teacher and the principal formative influence on Seni Bilah Melayu. Through direct training in Silat Harimau Berantai and Silat Tomoi, Guru Ilmi inherited methods, principles, combat logic and values that continue to inform the system.Guru Jak’s belief that Silat should help make the practitioner a better person remains central to how the knowledge is taught and carried forward.


GURU WAN YUSMARFounder, Silat SekilatGuru Wan Yusmar is Guru Ilmi Khalid’s current Silat teacher. Through Silat Sekilat, Guru Ilmi continues to deepen his study of weapon methods, including the Malay sword and other weapons within Malay Silat.These lessons contribute to his continuing development, while Silat Sekilat remains a distinct system with its own identity.Guru Wan Yusmar actively supports Guru Ilmi Khalid’s work in developing Seni Bilah Melayu and has given the system his blessing.

REPRESENTATIVES

Seni Bilah Melayu develops internationally through carefully selected representatives. Representation is not automatic. It is entrusted by the founder based on continued training, character and responsibility in carrying the knowledge.Representatives may introduce the art, coordinate approved activities and support its development within their appointed territories. Rank, certification and teaching authority remain subject to the founder’s approval.


MAESTRO ANDREA CAPIZZIOfficial Representative of Seni Bilah Melayu in GermanyMaestro Andrea Capizzi of Scuola Siciliana is the official representative of Seni Bilah Melayu in Germany.
